Avocado prices are soaring

Supply chain, lower rainfall, inspections at the U.S. Mexico border are some of the reasons for higher avocado prices

Avacodos are more expensive, they are double of what they were this time a year ago. A carton of 48 Haas Avocados costs $78.76.

In February of 2022, if you remember, the U.S. suspended its imports of Avocados from the Mexican state of Michoacan after a U.S. official recieved a threat. The imports were reinstated shortly after, but the suspension was enough to drive up prices. The delay resulted in a slowdown of hundreds of millions of dollars, and just to make matters worse less rainfall than usual in the region resulted in smaller crop yields.

David Magana, senior analyst for horticulture at Rabobank thinks that the peak in prices has occured and we are to see a cool down in avocado prices. The U.S. is perhaps the largest consumer of avocados per capita, and in the last 10 years avocado demand has more than doubled Magana noted. Cince de Mayo and the superbowl are two times of the year when avocado prices rise due to seasonal demand.
